Dark Chocolate Bar Hot Chocolate is not your ordinary hot chocolate. With hints of coffee, cinnamon, and vanilla, it’s certainly a far cry from the powdered drink mix you pour from a package and mix with hot water. This is a hot chocolate you save for occasions that you want to make special.
I made Dark Chocolate Bar Hot Chocolate last winter there was snow on the ground. We had spent days at home skiing around our neighborhood, decorating gingerbread houses, and watching Christmas movies. The first night the roads started to clear, we loaded up the car and drove to the elaborately lit Peacock Lane in Portland.
It was a night that the four blocks of English Cottage/Tudor style homes were closed to traffic. Snow blanketed the lawns and ice covered the street. We poured our thermos of hot chocolate and strolled down Peacock Lane enjoying the Christmas lights. Then the kids were off slipping and sliding and “ice skating” in sneakers down the middle of the street.
We can probably never recreate that amazing snowy evening, but it’s easy to recreate Dark Chocolate Bar Hot Chocolate to bring along as you embark on another adventure and make fun memories.
Chocolate: I use a dark chocolate bar that is 54% or darker, but you can use milk chocolate if you prefer. For a smoother hot chocolate, use a ready to eat chocolate candy bar because it is already tempered. Tempering chocolate means slowly heating then cooling it to produce a smooth, silky, glossy chocolate. You can use a chocolate baking bar, but your Dark Chocolate Bar Hot Chocolate will not be quite as smooth.
Butter: I prefer salted butter for the extra flavor the salt brings to the drink.
Milk and Cream: I use heavy whipping cream and whole milk, but you can use any cream or milk. The less percentage of fat, the less rich and creamy your hot chocolate will taste.
Instant espresso powder, cinnamon, and vanilla: While none of these flavors dominates another, they all add to the intricacies and richness of this drink. You’ll be left wanting another sip as you try to figure out just what it is that makes this hot chocolate different from others you’ve tried and what makes it so darn delicious?!
Twin Foodie Review: This is quick and fabulous! If you have any powdered fake stuff hanging out in your pantry, beware. Once you taste this, you will never go back!
