Clean out the junk food
Make healthy eating easier! Go through your pantry and refrigerator and get rid of all the boxes, jars, and cans of processed foods. Check labels! Many foods that you think might be healthy have added sugar or preservatives. Once you have a clean kitchen, make a weekly plan of meals you can eat at home. Pack leftovers and healthy snacks to take with you when you leave.
Eat fresh, whole foods
Stay away from all processed foods. Think about shopping around the edges of your grocery store. You’ll find fresh produce, meat, bread, and dairy. Depending on your diet, you may eat some or all of these. As you shop the aisles in the middle of the store, read labels! You can find some healthy foods here, but it is much harder. Most cans, bottles, and jars have added sugar and preservatives even if it’s an otherwise healthy food when eaten fresh.
Eat before you are famished
When you are ravenously hungry, you tend to eat anything in sight and grab the easiest quickest option. Spend a few minutes preparing a healthy meal before hunger strikes! Make a little extra and you will have something to eat later as you prepare your next healthy meal.
Be prepared with healthy snacks
Get rid of all the chips, crackers, and cookies in your pantry. Fill your kitchen with fresh fruit, fresh vegetables (sugar snap peas, bell peppers, carrots) to dip in hummus, and nuts and seeds. Blend fresh and frozen fruit with greens to make a healthy, vitamin packed smoothie.
When sweet cravings hit, grab a piece of fresh fruit. As your diet allows, occasionally eat a square of extra dark chocolate (72% cocoa or higher).
Drink more water
Sometimes your body signals hunger, but all it really needs is a tall glass of water. Besides hydrating your body, drinking water flushes the toxins out of your system, increases energy, and promotes weight loss.
Replace diet drinks with lemon infused water
If you don’t prefer the taste of plain water, try adding a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. If you have a SodaStream or drink carbonation machine, carbonate plain water then add a few drops of fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice. Start with filtered water! Sometimes the taste of tap water is enough to make you turn to diet drinks, but clean, filtered water tastes delicious. Give your taste buds some time to reset and you’ll start craving fresh, pure water.
Think about more than food
Plan an exercise routine that will help you feel better, have more energy, and crave healthy eating. When you are sweating and feeling your muscles burn during a good workout, the last thing you want to do is ruin all your hard work by eating unhealthy foods.
I hope these tips help make dieting and a healthy lifestyle easier for you. As you see results, your motivation to eat healthy food and achieve your diet and fitness goals will increase. Try these tips out and let me know if they work for you.
